Daniel Stolpe's mentor / apprenticeship 1960 - 1962
Dan Stolpe received a scholarship to Otis Art Institute in 1959. Turner was then an instructor at Otis who had a printmaking studio in his home. Over the next several months, Stolpe would visit Turner at his studio, attracted to both the personality of the artist and to his art. A combination of Turner's masterful drawing techniques and his singular dedication as an artist convinced Stolpe , twenty at the time, to get on with his ambition as an artist. Stolpe dropped out of college and Turner accepted him as an apprentice. For the next two years Stolpe learned how to work as an artist on a day to day basis. Pulling etchings, woodcuts, framing and curating of Turner's work was in the master- apprentice tradition. During this period Stolpe work nights and weekends developing his own skills and receiving criticism from Turner when the time for evaluation came. |
